Habit elimination therapy is a behavioral intervention used to help individuals to stop undesirable habits, such as thumb sucking, nail biting, finger sucking, prolonged pacifier use, tongue thrusting. Any sucking habit that is chronic past 3 years of age has the potential of affecting a child or adult’s oral musculature, teeth and the shape of their palate.
Habit Elimination Therapy focuses on identifying the triggers or cues that lead to these habits and replacing them with more positive behaviors or coping strategies. Elimination of the habit is attained in a short period of time, using positive, relation-building, and rewarding methods. The rate of success is higher when the child is the decision-maker in eliminating the habit.

Practical Strategies: The therapist provides easy-to-implement activities that caregivers can implement at home to promote progress.
